Dentist Rates

At Diamond Dental, we strive for transparency in our rates so that you always know what to expect. In Belgium, dental rates are determined in consultation between the government (RIZIV), the health insurance funds and the dentists. Every year a convention is drawn up which dentists can choose to join or not. Below we explain the difference between conventioned, non-conventioned and partially conventioned dentists.

Conventional vs. Non-conventional Dentists

Conventional Dentist

A conventional dentist adheres to the rates set by the NIHDI. This means that they use the standard RIZIV rates for all treatments. This rate provides predictability and clarity because, as a patient, you only pay the copayment, which is the difference between the established rate and the amount reimbursed by the health insurance fund.

Non-Conventional Dentist

A non-conventional dentist is free to charge their own fees and does not have to adhere to the NIHDI rates. This allows them to charge higher amounts, also known as fee supplements. These supplements are not reimbursed by the health insurance fund, meaning you may pay more for treatment at a non-conventional dentist.

Partially Conventionalized Dentist

Some dentists opt for a partial convention. They work part of their time at NIHDI rates and part without this restriction. The hours when they work at the conventioned rates should be clearly visible in the practice. When making an appointment, ask if and when the dentist works at RIZIV rates.

Important Notes

Just because a dentist is non-conventional does not always mean that every treatment is more expensive. Some non-conventional dentists charge convention rates for certain treatments or specific patient groups. So it is advisable to discuss this with your dentist in advance to avoid surprises.
